Chapter One: Introduction
Hello there fellow RtCW gamers and new bloods. I am KoRn-Warrior-, one
of many wolf players who have gotten so addicted to the game its become
a religion to some of us. The game is great, it has the best aspects of
its preticessors with unbeatable team-based gameplay and great
knowladge and intellegence to perfect. I am going to introduce you to
the more famous side of gaming, the competition side, and mostly the
RtCW competition side. I have competed in RtCW in one way or anouther
since it started; whether it be as a shrub player doing "Clan battles"
once a month or as a CAL-M OSP player scrimming 10 times a week and
playing in extremely-rushfilled matches. Competition is the best part
of gaming, and the best place to really get into the game. Hope you
enjoy my ode to RtCW Competition. Enjoy!
Chapter Two: Pre-Game
Well, to compete you need to be on the same level as your oppenents,
and that includes maps and patches. So when you install RtCW make sure
you get all the official map packs, the newest patches, and whatever
looks interesting imbetween. Also, 99% of the competative community use
a file called a config. This file saves your keyboard and mouse binds
and settings, along with video and in-game settings. It is really
useful and is your best friend in Wolf. Most of the best players
configs can be found @ http://www.team-arise.com ---> Configs. Before you
download and use the config, remember to put it in your main folder and
make sure you really want the config. It might bind actions to
different keys so make sure to check it out or edit it before you use
it.
After getting all the updates and a decent config setup, You need to
learn the lingo. I know it sounds wierd, but every game has its own
random words. Alot of words are just abreviations but some are new
words altogether.
I made a mini-dictionary for some of the words.
1. Owned (n): to kill
in a fasion of total dominance, to overpower and
survive with little wounds. Synonims: pwnt. ownt. prawned. raged.
2. Rofl (?): it means
rolling on the floor laughing....
3. lol (?): it means
laugh out loud
4. gg (?): it means
good game
5: gtfo (?): it means
get the f*ck off
6: imo (?): it means
in my opinion
7: Elbow pads (n):
Its really random, but if people talk about these
they are preparing to own, and if they take em off then they are
owning.....really random i know.
8: facial (n): it
means you got a face full of lead
9: shanked (n): it
means you got knifed
10: j00 (pn): means
you
11: l33t (adj): it
means you are skilled, but is usually used
sarcastically
12: cc (n):
abreviation for corner camp, it means you sit and lean
around a corner then pop out and shoot
13: wtf (?): it means
what the f*ck
14: lmao (?): it
means laugh my ass off
15: rolled (v): it
means you got beat up bad, or just ran
over.....rolled over, defeated bad. Can be considered owned.
16. downgrade (n): it
means the person who is being called it is a
wannabe, a bad player
17: noob (n): it
means you are new to the game, can mean you suck.
18: asshat (n): a
person who talks alot of crap, or just generally is
dumb
19: tk (n):
abreviation for team kill, it means you kill a teammate.
20: rgr (v):
abreviation for roger. Synonims: affirmative, yes.
21: scrim (n): a
scrim is short for scrimmage, or battle. Where 2 clans
fight each other in-game.
22: strat(n): a strat
is short for strategy, or plan. Where you will be
at, who will shoot first, what time you will rush, etc. Strats are the
blood of competitive wolf.
Thats just a few of the many tearms or "lingo" of RtCW. After you got
that down you are ready to move on to the next chapter; finding a home
.
Chapter Three: Find A Home
You can't be a one man team, you need to find a home (well many
actually). First off you should find a good server where some of the
"best" players play and where it is usually active. Play their alot and
try to join a clan or start your own clan and advertise that you are
recruiting and what you intend on doing. Also, find yourself a few
sites with large community forums so you can build relationships and
keep up to date with the crap going on. Some sites are:
www.rtcwfiles.com - the resource
center of wolf
www.planetwolfenstien.com
- gamespy's center of wolfology
www.planet-rtcw.com - ran for
the gamers, run by the gamers
If your wondering, relationships in this game are very important
just like life. Many lesser-skilled players have rose to fame and have
gained so much knowladge just because they were nice to a player when
he was just like them, and he rose and gained skill and shared with
people he knew. Also you can gain some good teammates if you befriend
them. Or get in good teams for that matter.
-The most crucial thing in the RtCW community is a program called mIRC
( http://www.mirc.com ). Its a large spread chatroom that has millions of
chanells and tons of players. You can chat up about the game, talk bout
whatever, or coordinate matches, pubs, or scrims. mIRC is a key factor
to getting known and getting into a well developed team.
-Anouther item that is really good, if not required, is a VoiceChat
program. The two most popular programs are TeamSpeak (
www.teamspeak.com ) and Ventrilo
( www.ventrilo.com ). Both are
used by
alot of teams, but it is best to use whatever your team uses so you can
talk to them over others; since your team always comes first.
After you got a team, a server you usually populate, the tools, and
some popular sites you visit regularly; you are ready for the next
chapter.
Chapter Four: Wolfmania
Your setup, your known, you play the game......but yet your still
called a noob and you still don't know the game as well as others. Can
you tell me what the spawn time is on mp_base? Can you judge the
distance to throw a grenade based on how your teammates react? I think
not.......well, this is were you learn how. After you get the basics
all setup you need to do 5 things.
1. Gun- Work on that thing, its not as easy as point and click believe
me. Unlike other games shooting the body takes alot more hits then 1-2,
and a headshot is the most effective way to defeat the enemy. Practice
by dueling ( 2 people stand across a room, one throws a nade away from
each person, after the nade blows you fire @ each other). Also, work on
moving targets and multiple targets. Your goal is to beable to take on
multiple enemies and still have a chance of living. Learn whether you
have a better longshot or close-range shot. If you have problems with a
smaller target but can kill up close, don't run out and fight a guy 100
yards away. Camp, wait, find a new target, make sure you always have
the advantage.
2. Trickjump- Trickjumping is very helpful in many ways. You will
always beable to get away faster or get to the warzone before a slower
enemy. Trickjumping consists of pressing the jump button at a certian
time so that you skip off the ground like a stone would off water when
thrown right. Its a very hard skill to master, but if you master it you
can hop over walls, fly past enemies, and get the advantage in many
tough situations.
3. Teamwork- Whether it be in a pub or in a scrim, try to help your
team out. Give them ammo when they ask, support them while they rush,
fire with them and not at their back. Heal your teammates, 2 guns is
always better then 1. Teamwork is one of the main factors in RtCW, and
learning the basics of it can really improve your skill altogether.
4. Learn the Game - Treat this game as if you were in Wolf 101 and had
a quiz next week. Find out the spawn times to maps so you don't fall
trap to enemies in force. Use them to your advantage to ambush them.
Learn maps so you can camp corners or areas better, or get the
upperhand on enemies who don't check every bend of the map. Learn the
battlesenses in the game, like to fall back or to charge while the
enemy is reloading. Learn to use your speakers as if they were your
god. You can hear if players and reloading, giving out ammo, or
sneaking up on you. You can win a match if you use your sound well
enough. Also, learn what class you like, or what one your better with.
Play as a panzer and see if you can kill more then when you are an LT.
If you suck at a panzer try a med and see what happens. Use different
guns, different classes, find your best class.
4. Gel - Finally but definately not least, gel into your team and learn
them, the players and the team altogether. Notice who works better with
who, and who you work better with. Learn their weaknesses and learn
their habbits. If your teammate runs left when attacked, make sure to
run right so you don't tk him. Learn the little things like that and
you will find yourself doing much better in the game.
After you pub your brains out, learn the trades, and feel ready. Go on
to the next chapter .
Chapter Five: Competition
Now that you have a config, a team, and some sense of the game, you
need some competition. Find some equal teams and better teams and play
them, learn how they play and learn to counter strats with your own
strats. Learn who fights better with who, or who does what on their
team and if they expect and can crack your strat. After setting up some
scrims with teams, your ready for the big-leagues
The big clans don't just pub and scrim, they compete in ladders and
leagues in multiple gaming sites. You setup a time with the opponent in
ladders and play that match only. In leagues you have a weekly match
with a fair ranged seed opponent. The main leagues are:
CAL League: www.caleague.com
TWL League: www.teamwarfare.com
There are smaller leagues but those two are the mainstream leagues and
the leagues with the most diversity and skill. Join the Open/Beta
divisions of the leagues and join the ladders you feel will help your
team. Then play away!
Chapter Six: Tweak and Repeat
Well, you learned the game, you got the config, the team, the skills,
the knowladge; yet you still don't beat those other guys eh? Well keep
going, practice makes perfect. Learn your weaknesses and squash them.
Fix your config, learn more maps and learn better spots. Learn more
secrets, just learn more. You will get there.
Chapter Seven: Conclusion
Unfortunately this guid to success comes to an end. I hope these words
helped you out, and if not i'm sure you were not damaged much . Keep
up the good work keeping Wolf alive. Cya.
